Bluesky is vc backed by investors, it is a false promise that I am sure a lot of people working on the project believe, but it is a false promise all the same.
Bluesky is in the part of its lifecycle where investors tolerate no return on their investment in favor of drawing more people in. That is the relevant difference between Bluesky and other social media.
There are cool parts to Bluesky but it is absolutely a false promise of a future the fediverse already provides (however imperfectly). It is also full of “liberal” sheep who tell themselves they think differently but are so locked into the mindset of the way things are that they NEED their social network to be owned and operated for a profit by people orders of magnitude more wealthy than them.
Bluesky will end up essentially the same as all investor backed for-profit social networks, it will grow into a toxic, centralized (or in this case pseudo-centralized because of the moderation system), shithole where only popular accounts get any engagement with their posts. Mark my words.
Blaming generations misses the point in some ways (the rich not boomers being the issue, we definitely need to keep our eye on the ball with that one) but also I can’t fucking stand how little most boomers care. Sometimes in the US it feels like it they are a generation of children that never had to grow up and now mostly just scold young people for being the adults in the room when they try to fix things.
It is just so pathetic and I feel robbed of the experience of having elders I can trust. All my elders are deeply sick and cannot let go of lifestyles that foreclose our future, nor do they take the consequences of destroying our only home seriously by and large, it feels like (well it really is) a betrayal of the largest order.
I wanted to live a life where I could look up to older generations and learn wisdom from them throughout my life, instead of feeling disgusted by their childlike lack of caring about future consequences.
These statistics are heartening that the sickness was not passed onto younger generations, but it is heart breaking all the same.
Unfortunately the energy requirements of “ai” are very real and more importantly the massive amount of investment and obsession with ai is specifically because of the moat that the insane energy requirements creates. Corporations have zero interest in an ai technology that is efficient and doesn’t require gargantuan energy requirements, it would be antithetical towards the strategic aims of these large technology companies.
The energy efficiency of traditional search engines was always a severe liability for google, ai solves that issue or at least they have convinced themselves it does.
…which isn’t to say you are wrong but the atrocious energy efficiency of ai is very very real.
In the US and other post industrialized nations where land is more valuable for other uses than agriculture, sure.
However the deforestation in the amazon probably eats most of that up.
Cutting trees down for wood isn’t the worst of it though, the first half of the 21st century will be categorized by climate change scientists as the period where earth’s boreal forests burned away.
The amount of boreal foresl acreage burned in the last two decades is staggering and is accelerating to put it mildly.
well we better start eating then!
lol are they trying get eaten for lunch by tools that generate static websites easily and without BS?
I mean Dokuwiki is an awesome wiki that doesnt need a database so backing up, sharing and file management is about as easy as it can be to DIY unless you just want to just sync logseq folders directly between computers.
https://www.dokuwiki.org/dokuwiki
I don’t understand why other much more unnecessarily complicted wiki softwares get recommended over dokuwiki, especially since there are some really nice plugins like the “farmer” plugin which allows you to make as many seperate subwikis each with potentially different associated accounts on a single dokuwiki.
thank goodness it mostly missed the yucatan, my heart goes out to florida tho :(
This assumes we have only one true self, and that only one version of our self is authentic, the rest must be masks constructed from cowardice and self deception…
I think not only does that way of seeing things constantly lead you on a wild goose chase through a never ending crowd of masks, it sets you up to cynically doubt the authenticity of every version of someone you meet which gets you nowhere towards understanding them.
the idea that we are one person who is the same in all contexts makes no sense a basic level
Inkscape recently also got decent multipage import and export for multipage pdfs and honestly it works great!
damn I have been using this damn program for… decades?
I have been yelling at it in frustration for equally as long… but seriously in terms of raw, no bullshit, consistent utility to people, GIMP deserves an immense amount of credit.
darktable kicks ass and I say that as someone who hates editing photos almost as much as I like taking them!
fyi at least in the US you are only legally allowed to make death threats (or carry them out for that matter) if you are actively driving a motor vehicle at the time, please for your own safety if you are going to murder someone or threaten to murder them, do it behind the wheel of a motor vehicle or you could end up in serious trouble with the law!
whos got recommendations for lesser known horror films?
edit wow thnx for the recommendations!
“Narrow nothing, kink is fine, but it isn’t appropriate in public. You just want to subject people to your kink against your will (which btw flies in the face of safe, sane, consensual.)”
I agree heterosexual cis gender white men have a huge issue with not getting consent! They should really keep their creepy kinks (like for example domestic abuse or racism or making creepy unsolicited comments to women… and girls) out of public spaces.
The hilarious thing about your argument is that it applies to cisgender heterosexual white men better than it does to furries.
Not that it was a good argument in the first place, it seems like you are unable to confront how narrow your view of the world is.
Look I love lemmy/reddit style social networks and I don’t disagree with the shallow reasons for why twitter has a character limit but there are legitimate and interesting reasons for character limits to posts. Is it better? probably not but sometimes less is more.
