  • I bought a Switch before I got married. A few years later Animal Crossing was released and my wife got into it. At some point she slipped and asked if I could bring her “her” Switch, which we still tease her about to this day. The good thing was playing and using the controller got her used to controllers in general. I eventually learned she’d been playing Overcooked using the buttons and stick on the same side of the controller, playing with one hand. She’s much better now! Nowadays the kiddo uses it the most playing Zelda. I really haven’t used it much myself lately.






  • I’m assuming the purchase came from outside Brazil, then? How was the import process? I used to work for a device manufacturer and we had some customers in Brazil. It seemed like import duties were often quite high and there was a good likelihood the customs inspector might want a bribe. Most customers would have us ship to someone in the US and it seemed like they weren’t freight forwarders, just someone they knew traveling to Brazil soon who would bring the device with them. Actually, most of Central and South America was like that.




  • I was wondering why anyone would go to the trouble when you can just buy a different brand.

    In Brazil, you can pick any e-reader you want, as long as it’s a Kindle. (Kobo, Boox, and other brands don’t sell their devices here.)

    That’s too bad, and surprising since later in the article it mentions that Kobo does have a store in Brazil to sell EPUB files, but not their readers.




  • I second this @OP / @[email protected], you’ll want to think carefully about if this is a situation where an open source/copyleft license is what you want to use. A couple concerns:

    • Any Creative Commons license will require the festival to list a credit for your work. That might not be an issue for the app or website, but the festival might not be interested in listing “poster by Tippon, used under a Creative Commons 4.0 license” every time they use something you created on social media, in print, or advertising.
    • An open source/copyleft license will permit other people to use the work you’ve created.
      • The festival might not appreciate this if you’ve created a graphic for them and some third party shows up selling t-shirts without giving the festival any money. You might not be able to use CC BY-NC if you want the festival to be able to sell things as a fundraiser, but then that opens it up to anybody to sell what you’ve created for the festival without giving money to the festival.
      • It sounds like you’re wanting to be able to reuse/sell your work to other clients in the future. If any of them figure out that your work for the festival is available under an open source/copyleft license, they can just take that without hiring you and then have their nephew/friend/AI make adjustments to the work you did for the festival.

    There are great reasons to use open source/copyleft licenses, but I don’t think they can or should be used in every situation. In this case they could be bad for both your and the festival’s interests. Ideally you’d be able to talk to a lawyer who specializes in contract and copyright law; the festival clearly has similar issues with other volunteer suppliers so perhaps they can find a lawyer willing to donate some time to provide them with a template that can be used for all their suppliers. Or if you’re doing a lot of freelance work yourself it’s probably worth finding your own attorney.

    Otherwise I’d try searching online for “example content license,” “example image license,” “example development license,” or similar along with your state/province/country and try to come up with at least something basic to cover you and the festival.

    Of course, if none of the concerns I raised are actually issues, Creative Commons has some great licenses.



  • Buses are great for public transit and the most cost effective option for some communities. There also seems to be a stigma against buses, though, where people are more willing to take a train than a bus. I’m starting to suspect that stigma extends to people wanting to build trains instead of buses that can get the same job done for less money than building a brand new train system.



  • I don’t think there’s any official distinction but what seemed to be an informal convention I noticed on Reddit was that sister communities were related topics (probably with some coordination/agreement among the communities’ mods) whereas partner communities tended to be related topics that had the same mod(s). Usually the latter might be something where any individual community would be less active so it would be easier for someone to moderate multiple communities.

    For an example using music styles, maybe c/ClassicRock might list c/ClassicPunk, c/PsychedelicRock, and c/Prog as sister communities. If someone modded c/PinkFloyd, c/TheWho, and c/DeepPurple they might be listed as partner communities.




  • About the only thing I can agree with you on here is I don’t like when people on Wikipedia archive a link and then list that as the primary source in the reference instead of the original link. Wikipedia (at least in English) has a proper method to follow for citations with links and the archived version should only become the primary if the original source is dead or has changed and no longer covers the reference.

    They should also honor a DMCA takedown and robots.txt, but at least with the DMCA I’m sure there’s a backlog. Personally I’ve always appreciated the archive’s existence, though, and would think their impact is small enough that it’s better to have them than block them.


  • Chromecast did get better once they added a remote, and they finally got YouTube TV to work well with switching family accounts. I’ll have to try that launcher because I’m unimpressed with trying to find the different apps.

    I still find Roku to be one of the simplest to use, but they do seem like they’re starting to turn more evil.

    I have never enjoyed the experience with any Amazon Fire TV and they’ve always seemed laggy.

    Apple TV is of course the most expensive but seems to do less selling of user data. Everyone else’s devices seem to sell at cost and then make up the difference on subscription sales and seeing user data. The remote is not great, though. My wife is always struggling with it and hitting the wrong thing. I’m more comfortable with it, but still find the touchpad jumping me to the wrong thing at times. I have seen third-party remotes that aim to eliminate the trackpad problem. I’ve considered buying one hoping it will make it easier for my wife, but paying another $20 for a remote for a system that’s already 3x the competition is annoying. Of course, if you have an iPhone you can also use that as a remote.

    If you have a gaming console, especially Xbox or PlayStation, it can fill the role of streaming device. You can buy remote controls that are more user-friendly than the game controller when watching media. Of course, buying a console just to watch content is massive overkill.

    I’d suggest not connecting your TV to the Internet and using a separate box for content given how much TV makers want to spy. Streaming boxes might not be much better, though.
