  • I’ve never really understood that argument. Most VPN software I’ve seen forces your DNS through the VPN as well which would bypass a public Wi-Fi’s attempt to DNS poison.

I use a VPN anytime I’m not on my home network just because it’s a super easy way for me to force my DNS to my own custom DNS with Adblock listing on the machine that’s running the VPN endpoint.

It’s wireguard, and it connects to a direct IP address. If someone tries to redirect or otherwise man in the middle of the connection wireguard will simply fail to establish a connection. Thanks to the fact that it uses a similar idea to pgp where the client and server already have each other’s public keys and there’s not really an unencrypted initial handshake even the initial talking has a form of encrypted communication thanks to the key pairings.

So like, my vpn is definitely proving security. Whether or not every random ass VPN you can buy is smart enough to force all DNS over the VPN or anything else I guess I can’t say for sure maybe it’s not common and that’s why but it definitely can be used to help automate some security measures when using a public network

  • It’s not that difficult? I’m over here in rural Washington along long beach, raymond, Aberdeen and Pacific Transit is quite viable for getting to work grocery stores and whatever else you need. I know because I’m a driver for them, I’m currently doing from Ilwaco to Aberdeen.

From my first stop to my second stop is a half hour, then an hour to the next stop, then a couple quick stops in town, then another half hour to Aberdeen. And yet I still service about 30 people a day, people rely on me to get to work, to do shopping, to go see the doctor. We also have a service where people can call upon us for very specific needs that aren’t covered by our routes. Three of them actually

We have a Dial-A-Ride service where you can request that we pick you up and drop you off at specific places or the nearest other bus stop in smaller shuttle buses (prioritizes ada passengers if demand is high)

We have a shopper shuttle service that literally just runs between a big pile of different stores and restaurants that people like to go to and they make connections with most of our other routes

And then we have the veteran connect service where we help make sure that veterans are able to get to their medical appointments as far out as Chehalis and Vancouver as there is unfortunately no VA hospitals near us.

Almost every furniture store in existence can deliver straight to your house now, even if you manage to find one that can’t just go rent a U-Haul for the day it’s not expensive. There’s no reason for your daily driver to be a massive truck because you might need something big at some point doesn’t matter whether your rural or not.

I definitely know what it’s like to put some mileage on a car as I currently Drive a total round trip mileage of 160 miles per day for getting to/from work. But thankfully for my wallet I’m driving a smart fortwo which gets on average 43 miles to the gallon so that definitely helps. And the only reason I need to do that is because I’m the one driving the bus so I can’t exactly take the bus to drive the bus unfortunately as much as I wish they would let me just take it home

  • The trick is to work for yourself instead of for someone else. This is what hobbies are for obviously those can be difficult to achieve under the current system of work for literally every goddamn fucking hour of your life other than sleep and eating but I assure you there is plenty of fulfillment to be found doing something for yourself and sometimes depending on what it is you find a passion for you can even turn it into a little side hustle job to make some extra money

  • If you don’t do Thanksgiving then this is honestly viable. Literally the only reason my big ass of an exists at this point is for a turkey because even though I got one of the probably largest countertop air fryers I could find where I can fit whole roasted chickens and do baking and other stuff it won’t fit a whole ass turkey and I don’t think I would want one that could that would be just a little bit too much counter space

My rv doesn’t move, i drive a smart fortwo and get 40+MPG

I have solar on my RV and don’t use utility electrical. No propane appliances, heatpump hot water, and heat/cooling. Top rated efficiency washer and a heatpump dryer to go with it. Just because i want to be rural doesn’t mean I’m wasteful.

I’m out here because it’s the only place land is remotely affordable and I’m tired of renting. I saved up what i could, managed to get a great deal on 5 acres. And built up a sustainable rv to live in till i can build a house.

Supposedly there are plans for fiber to deploy in this area within the next 5 years. When that happens I’m all over it, i regularly go on hikes the trails out here in the mountains from old logging roads are amazing.

That doesn’t mean i shouldn’t be allowed some modern entertainment as well

I’m just saying blindly calling for it to go away entirely (which i see a lot of on stuff like this) isn’t helpful. Clearly they need to tone down emissions but it’s a useful service.

I work 10hr shifts at work and it’s 1hr 30 both to and from work, moving isn’t really an option for me atm. I don’t think it’s unreasonable I’d like to be able to stream my shows or play games with my friends to relax

This, I’m both very rural and in an RV at the same time. Starlink is literally my only means of playing games. The only other even remotely viable option is LTE internet from something like T-Mobile but out here the towers don’t really have much capacity so I might be able to play the game fine and I might just start disconnecting Midway through a match randomly as the internet struggles to even load a basic web page

Because jellyfin has less device compatibility, worse transcoding performance, and still struggles with media matching. Oh and still had memory leak issues.

I have it installed, regularly update and test it, i want to ditch plex. But it’s just got to many basic issues. Anime matching in particular is rough and yes even after adjusting match sources some anime just outright fails till i manually match, matches incorrectly, won’t work either way.

No it’s not the filenames. I use Sonarr, they are all very clean.

Edit: i give up figuring out how to make this stay treed, fucking hate reddit/lemmy formatting

  • Honestly for me it’s about was the lot designed by an idiot. Large stores like Walmart and home depot are the worst offenders. If I need to park in the far out of reaches of the lot there’s never any fucking cart returns there.

All of them are grouped up right near the fucking front of the store where it’s least needed, and then there’s nothing at the outer edges. I make sure my cart is somewhere it will not move even in strong wind, but the designers of the parking lot can go fuck themselves for not putting a cart return stall at the outer edges where it makes sense in those massive lots.

Other stores like WinCo and costco seem to have this figured out. Cart returns at regular intervals across the entire parking lot. So no excuse not to return there

The problem is that nobody, apparently not even manufacturers anymore know how to fucking aim headlights. Headlights literally have aimer knobs and you are supposed to aim them such that they cut off just before they would blind the majority of vehicles

I have projector LEDs and with a projector lens you can get an extremely practically knife sharp cut off and I have it literally just at the very bottom edge of most small sedan windshield lines. It’s great my headlights are bright as fuck they go all the way from the left shoulder to the right shoulder even on four lane roads but they don’t blind anybody and I’ve had friends help me test that by just kind of passing each other on the street and them saying it was fine and wasn’t bad like other people’s cars.

At some point people started associating the height of your light with the amount of safety, it’s possible to get distance without adding height but everyone’s forgotten how that works
