This is great news, it’s frankly embarrassing that it took this long. I know here in New Brunswick, our Conservative government has done the absolute bare minimum to help out hungry kids, of which there are many (30 000 kids live in poverty in NB, and many more probably suffer from some degree of food insecurity.)

It’s such a no-brainer to invest in this, like even if you’re a heartless neoliberal ultra-capitalist who thinks the poor should suffer, do you not want your future-workforce-in-training to actually absorb their training? Hungry kids don’t learn good.

You say that, but Republican legislators all over the US are fighting against universal free school lunch programs.

But their goal isn’t an educated workforce, it’s to cynically destroy the public school system so that they can funnel taxpayer money to dubious christian private schools via voucher programs.

Look at the food that is served in hospitals. Garbage.

My worry is that we leave it to the government to feel our future generations with unhealthy food

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The federal government says it will launch a national school food program, hoping to deliver meals to an additional 400,000 children per year.

The national program will “take pressure off of families, invest directly in the future of our kids and make sure they’re able to reach their full potential — feeling healthy and happy,” Trudeau said in a statement.

The school food program is not one of the policy provisions set out under the Liberal-NDP supply-and-confidence deal, which has seen the New Democrats support the government in key votes for two years.

“Parents are doing everything they can to take care of their kids, but the cost of food just keeps going up,” NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said in a media statement last month.

Last December, Conservatives voted against a private member’s bill that would have established a national framework for a school food program.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has harshly criticized the Liberal government for its handling of the economy and of affordability issues, frequently noting the rise in food bank usage across the country.
